Camping

Camping is an inexpensive alternative to a hotel stay. Nevertheless, camping is less developed in French Polynesia then in other tourist destinations. You must provide your own tent (campgrounds seldom provide them), which you can purchase in Tahiti at a sports outlet or a department store.

A number of family owned and operated guest houses may let you camp on their property but be aware they do not officially offer a camping site. During cultural and sports events on some islands (the Marquesas and the Tuamotus), this type of accommodation can prove to be very practical when family-run guest houses have no vacancies.
