Tatoos

The cultural revival

You are here : Discover Paradise > Culture > Tatoos

Tattoing was prohibed at the time of the missionaries, but it didn't disappear totally. For the Polynesians, the tatoo is a means of asserting their ma'oho cultural identity, it favours the use of the colour black over the others. Inspired from plant or animal geometry, a tatto has most of the time a symbolic signification. Men and Women display the tattoo as a jewel. Thus, contrary to the occidental "intimist" approach, the tatoo is made to be seen promenently. For some years now, a new generation of particularly gifted tattooers has been emerging, on and around Tahiti and Her Islands, whose talents are more and more sought after passing tourists.
