The Sacred Raiatea lies in the same lagoon as Taha'a, and was separated from it by an eel possessed by the spirit of a princess. It offers the magical atmosphere of an island steeped in legend, the veritable cradle of Polynesian civilisation. A number of marae, including that of Taputapuatea, bear witness to this.

The sanctuary was the seat of the religious and political power of the whole of Polynesia when the Europeans discovered it. This is where the head of the Polynesian civilisation is to be found. From the Faaroa, Passing alongside its numerous waterfalls, up to the summit of mount Temahani, where the "Tiare Apetahi" grows.
Raiatea is also a delight for divers who can explore marvellous underwater gardens near the coral reef. Many channel passes (narrow passages in the sea that allow boats to enter the lagoon) and ideal sailing conditions make Raiatea the perfect nautical centre.
